2008 WSOP Forecast, Day Three: Nonconformity as Conformity

2008 WSOP Forecast, Day Three: Nonconformity as Conformity

Today is the third day of the 39th annual World Series of Poker, and the pros are already showing themselves worthy of the name. The first event, begun on Friday, was the $10k Pot Limit Holdem Championship, one of the many $10k events this year, of which we said yesterday that Andy Bloch was going to go deep in more of them than any other player. Is he sitting at the final table today? Even if not, he was in the top four chip lead spots yesterday.

Yesterday was the first of two starting days for Event 2, a No Limit Holdem $1,500 event. Yes, $1,500, not $15k, so why on earth are they splitting the starting field for such a "small" event? Because they (they being Harrah's in this case) seem to be really listening to what their advisors are saying - and the poker players at large - and are moving away from the cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all mentality. Their non-conformity to the past has become the new conformity, the new norm, and that is a good thing.

Today will be Day 2B, the event will wrap up over the next two days. Also coming up on Monday will be Event 3 (a $1,500 Pot Limit Holdem event) and Event 4 (a $5,000 Mixed Limit Holdem event).

Look for Bloch to do well in the Mixed Limit, if he plays (and why shouldn't he? He knows how good he is in these games.) As for who else will do good, it is going to depend on who enters, and how many. If the first amateurs to make their names known in this WSOP don't emerge by tonight, they will by Monday night. There will be some new stars by the end of the run.
