On Day 16 of the 39th annual World Series of Poker, Event 28 will kick off, the $5,000 Pot Limit Omaha with Rebuys event, along with Event 27, the $1,500 No Limit Holdem event. These two events are going to be near polar opposites due to a combination of factors, mostly surrounding the kinds of players that they will draw.
No Limit Holdem has become the everyman game of poker, with average amateur players taking a shot at the brass ring and scoring more often, it seems, than the seasoned pros. This may not be statistically accurate, but it might be perceptually so. For this reason many pros pass on NLHE because the fields get flooded with the lucky.
Pot Limit Omaha, however, takes a different flavor of poker skill, and so there are less amateurs in the game getting lucky. Add the higher price tag and the expense of the rebuy factor, and amateurs will avoid it like the plague. Case in point, the recent $5,000 2-7 lowball rebuy event won by Mike Matusow held only 84 player, most of them pros.
So today these two events will kick off and here is the prediction of what they will look like. Event 28 will have comparatively few tables, with comparatively large recognition factor of big name pros. Event 27 will have more tables and fewer pros - mostly because they will be in Event 28.
