2008 WSOP Diary, June 29: Ryan Hughes Becomes the First Player to Win Two Stud Hi/Lo Bracelets

Well we are about a full month into the World Series of Poker, and after nearly thirty days of non-stop play, we have the winners from Event #47 ($1,500 Stud Hi/Low) and Event #48 ($2,000 No Limit Holdem) joining this season's pantheon of bracelet holders.

During Event #47, Ryan Hughes started the day with a bit of a handicap. His personal pole position on the day can either be expressed in terms of how many chips he had, or where he was in the pecking order. On Day 2 of play, the decision was made to stop with 13 players left, and considering how things were going for him at that point, if they had played down to a proper final table number on the second day, there was a very real possibility that Ryan would never had even made it to Day 3.

He was at the table on the third and final day of the tournament and reversed his fortunes. Not only did he quickly become the leader, but he finished the tournament with his second WSOP bracelet and also as the first player in history to win two Stud hi/lo bracelets.

During Event #48, if someone turned away for a couple of minutes to give their drink order to the cocktail waitress, they may have missed one or two eliminations. The final table was far from a day long affair, and the whole thing was over in a few scant hours.

Alexandre Gomes came out on top during what seemed like a turbo event, coming from the middle of the pack to eventually beat Marco Johnson for his first WSOP bracelet.

The first day of Event #51 is just winding down and among the wreckage was Mickey Seagle who exited thanks to Mike Matusow and Isabelle Mercier. Phil Hellmuth is still hanging around in this event and still looking for that 12th bracelet. This is the last event before the Main Event gets going, and the real carnage begins.
