2008 WSOP Diary, July 13: Tiffany Michelle Among Chip Leaders

2008 WSOP Diary, July 13: Tiffany Michelle Among Chip Leaders

It's been an interesting sports year when it comes to championship match-ups. The NFL was overjoyed when someone from the Manning gene pool faced off against the evil New England Patriots and their "Namethesque" quarterback, Tom Brady.

The NHL had their wildest dreams realized when Cindy Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins went up against "The NY Yankees of Hockey", the Detroit Red Wings, and the NBA had something that ended with "gasm" when the Boston Celtics renewed their Championship rivalry with the Los Angeles Lakers.

So why not hope for a World Series of Poker final table that would include 11 time bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth and 10 time champion Johnny Chan. With Phil looking for his 12th piece of WSOP jewelry and Johnny trying to tie Phil, it would have been compelling. Well, it's not going to happen, both are now out of the tournament.

Of course with that story evaporating, another, equally interesting one is taking shape. At the end of the day today we had Tiffany "Hot Chips" Michelle sitting at third in the chip count. At this point in the tournament, with a final table probably being decided in the next twenty-four hours, there is a good possibility that she will be sitting with the remaining players next November and competing for the Main Event Championship. If she manages to best the rest of the field, she will be the first woman to ever win a Main Event and have a place in poker history.

So while we said goodbye to a lot of the seasoned players today, we have a leader board full of new faces. We will see what comes with the final push before the whole thing shuts down until fall.
