2008 WSOP Diary, July 10: Vanessa Rousso Out of the Main Event

Sometimes it seems everyone absolutely adores Vanessa Rousso. Despite all the love she was getting from the gallery, Ms. Rousso couldn't hold on and make it through Day 3 of the World Series of Poker. The thing that probably stung the most is that she lost on hands that would usually have been winners. She was crippled on a hand where her opponent hit both the turn and the river to complete a straight. In the final hand she was all-in with her A-J vs. Q-4, and a Queen fell on the river.  Obviously she was not the day's only casualty as there are now less than 500 players left to compete for the Main Event title. Brian Schaedlich started the day with the chip lead, but due to circumstances beyond his control, walked away in the evening with only 22,000 left to his name. Jens Klaning ended Brian's day on a sour note by flopping two-pair. This beat Schaedlich's pair of Jacks.  While a number of big names found their way to the rail, there are still some titans of the game hanging around and in relatively good shape. To the chagrin of anyone who enjoys intelligent conversation and true wit, Mike "The Mouth" Matusow is still playing. The sport's biggest mouth has already claimed one bracelet this year. Johnny Chan and Phil Hellmuth continue to go deeper into the tournament and with every passing day it looks like the WSOP's dream of having these two wind up at the final table is closer to a reality. We shall see.
