There was a pair of awards presentations going on Day 3 of the 2008 WSOP. The more high profile one was the MTV movie awards. Several miles away from this train wreck, a legitimate award was being handed out. Nenad Medic was the first person of the season to be awarded a World Series of Poker bracelet. Even though PokerStars team member Kathy Liebert to make the whole thing interesting showed some strength and managed to finish fourth after being shortstacked, Nenad eventually wound up heads-up against Andy Bloch and eventually eliminated him to take the first victory of the World Series of Poker.
His victory was the top story of day, but something else of note that many folks were starting to talk about was the fact that it was a star studded final table. With players like Phil Laak, Kathy Liebert, Mike Sexton, and Andy Bloch competing for the year's first prize, it sets a good tone for the rest of WSOP.
Event #2 did not treat well the sort of person who likes to cry during movies and buy really expensive shoes. Clonie Gowen was eliminated by Pat White on Day 1B of this event while Isabelle "No Mercy" Mercier received none from the board when an unlikely river card snatched her defeat from the jaws of victory and sent her out of the tournament. After staring at the cards for a few moments in disbelief she exclaimed that she would be back in seven weeks. Liz Lieu was also sent packing while holding pocket aces. If you can't win with those cards, than it is not going to be your day.
