WSOP Winners – Event #54 and #55

WSOP

Abe Mosseri started the final day of play for Event #55 in a position that has become all too unfamiliar to those who eventually win a World Series of Poker championship this year; he had a chip lead going into the final day of play. So many of this year’s tournaments have been an example of underdog grit, this one was a statement about the power of a big stack. While he didn’t hold that lead for the entire day, the few times he was overtaken, he was became the proverbial dog snapping at the heels of the new chip leader. In the end it was Abe Mosseri against Masayoshi Tanaka. After a brief, heads-up struggle, it was suddenly just Abe Mosseri. His efforts have given him a brand new championship bracelet, and $165,521. I’m not sure, but I think that may be enough to buy him into the upcoming Main Event.

Unlike Mosseri, Tony Veckey didn’t have the luxury of starting the final day of Event #54 with a nice, convenient chip lead. He had to slug it out against 25 other players on day 3 of this $1,500 No Limit Hold'em tournament; 13 of whom had more chips in their stack then Veckey. He spent the day playing an elusive form of poker that was both aggressive, and slippery. There were times when one would think he almost had a poker version of spider sense. This was on particular display during a hand when he laid his pocket kings down preflop to somebody who challenged him with an all-in bet. After 11 hours of play, final victory came with Veckey flopped a straight, and crushed any hope that Jason Wheeler may have had about adding something from the WSOP to his jewelry collection.

We congratulate all of the day’s winners!
