When Mike Sexton took down not only Mike Matusow but Daniel Negreanu at the 2006 World Series of Poker's Tournament of Champions, it was a sweet, sweet victory. Not only did Mike Sexton, often referred to as the "Ambassador of Poker", create this version of the TOC's predecessor many years ago, Sexton has played the role of expert commentator for the World Poker Tour since its inception, and has had plenty of opportunities to comment on both Matusow and Negreanu as they played.
&nbps;Sexton is one of the few remaining high profile, old school poker players who were around long before lipstick cameras, the internet, and iPods. Sexton's role as commentator for the WPT, along with Vince Van Patten, seemed to put him at odds with the competing WSOP, which made his victory even more noteworthy. Sexton sat quiet through most of the final table, making plays when he sensed it was appropriate and spending the rest of his time watching the personalities at the table. When the game was down to three players, Sexton made an amazing call versus Mike "The Mouth" Matusow, who had pushed very hard with a hand full of air. Sexton called a bet holding only a pair of threes. His call left Matusow agape and Negreanu laughing at his buddy getting caught out by the old school Sexton.
In the end the older Sexton out-endured "Kid Poker" Negreanu, who looked punch drunk by the time he made a fateful call with an inferior hand and gave up the event. The TOC was a "winner take all" event, so Sexton was the only one to get paid, and at one million dollars it was quite a pay day. True to his word, given before the start of the event, Sexton donated half his winnings to charity and then announced that from now on, 100% of all tournament winnings he amasses will go to charity. Mike Sexton: a class act and a true champion.
