All things must come to an end, and the dispute between TV producer Bruce Crispin Leyser and 2006 World Series of Poker main event winner Jamie Gold has ended as it had begun - an agreement was struck between two men. It all started in the days before the WSOP last year, when former Hollywood Producer Gold partnered with an online poker site to get a few celebrities to wear branded swag, and Gold farmed out the work to Leyser for the promise of a share in any winnings. When Gold won it all, Leyser found stonewalling instead of check writing, and took the matter to court.
The basic dispute revolved around how much - if any - of the $12 million won by Gold was going to end up in Leysers pockets, and when. Gold had left a message on his partners machine that he would be taken care of financially, a message Leyser saved and played in court. The exact exchange after the WSOP win is obscure, but it was enough to prompt Lesyer to go to the courts and freeze Golds assets. Gold was allowed to take half and the other half was put in an interest bearing account while the matter was grinded out in court.
Motions were filed, complaints were registered, meetings were held, and still the money sat in limbo. Lesyers position was clear - Gold had promised him half, and he wanted half. Golds side provided a number of clarifications suggesting that it was to be a gift from one to the other (and thus not a binding legal agreement) and the like. The judge was inclined to side with Leyser on the matter, according to statements made, and finally the issue was resolved - once more by Gold and Leyser making an agreement. This time - with a few more witnesses and a lot less left up to interpretation - Gold agreed to share his winnings with Leyser. Did Leyser get the whole half? The exact amount is unknown, but the word on the street is both parties are happy with the resolution, and no one would be surprised to see Leyser around town beaming a six million dollar smile.
