A final table with three named players and six who had never cashed in a WSOP event proved hard on the pros as the chip leader coming into the event, 2001 WSOP Main Event champ Carlos Mortensen, was the first casualty. Following behind him were Ron Stanley in eighth and Don Zewin in sixth, leaving five newcomers to battle it out for the lion's share of the $4,164,000 prize pool. In the end it was Brandon Cantu from Canada who emerged the victory, taking home a prize that was nearly double that of second place finisher Phong Ly from California. While the final hand of Ly: ... against Cantu: ... and a board of: ... finished the event, it was a previous hand that made Cantu's victory a foregone conclusion. When Cantu bet drew Ly in with:... against:... the board favored the Canadian with: ... causing Cantu to double up and Ly with only $10,000 chips remaining.
