World Series of Poker Europe - Day 6, September 11th, 2007
The sixth day didn't end with a bang - it was more like a flushing sound. Day 2A of the World Series of Poker Europe Main Event concluded with a pair of last minute eliminations. Pat Scanlan ended Ian Munns tournament on the very last hand of the night while Gus Hansen took out Chris Bjorin in a hand that had all the excitement and energy of a Bob Newhart running the 40 yard dash.
Even though there was no exciting river bad beat, or post flop drama in the hand where Hansen broke Bjorin's chip stack as well as his heart, it was typical of how Gus had been playing this evening. Hansen had broken everyone at his table: well, almost everyone. Jennifer Harman, doing her best impression of a succubus that had been crossbred with a mule, continued to suck the life out of opponents while stubbornly refusing to be eliminated.
While we are on the topic of things that refuse to go away quietly, Phil Hellmuth has spent a chunk of the final hours of the day's action swirling the drain, but valiantly refusing to go down the tubes. For quite some time he has been nursing a stack that would only look impressive if compared to the Lollipop league from the film "The Wizard of Oz". He ended the day with 10,500 in chips. Only Jani Sointula with 5,600 ended in worse shape then the 11-time bracelet winner.
The 40 players left today from the 111 who started off this morning. They will return on Friday which is officially Day 3 of the Main Event. As the poker action ends for the night, Gus Hansen has the chip lead among this group and will start on Friday with 349,400 in chips.
