Today we have crowned the first winner ever at the World Series of Poker Europe. The person who will forever hold this place in history is German poker ace Thomas Bihl. That is the good news, the bad news is that he had to beat Jennifer Harman in a heads up match to secure this place in poker history. Playing Jennifer is always a two-edged sword. If you hesitate for a moment, she will do to you with a deck of cards what Vlad the Impaler did to people who made the mistake of ticking him off. If you play your best and are lucky enough to beat her, it almost feels like you have just kicked a puppy.
So far the crowning of a the WSOP Europe's first Championship is the most major news to have broken during the first days of this inaugural extension of poker's most prestigious tournament. Outside of that the second event is whittling the players down, and as of the writing of this column we are well into the final table. The survivors in this event are as follows:
Dario Alioto - 1,300,000
Tony G - 715,000
David Callaghan - 640,000
Istvan Novak - 525,000
Outside of this, the players have been behaving in the sort of reasonable manner that folks would expect from a Bob Jones University graduating class. There have been no incidents of note, and Mr. Peanut is, to this point, completely unmolested. Outside of a questionable photo of Doyle Brunson and Catgirl that was taken down almost as soon as it was put up on pokernews.com, all has been quiet on the western front. Of course considering the smile on Doyles face, and the fact that this young lady possibly did something to coax a grin out of the sports elder statesman, one must wonder exactly what the put in the Catnip across the pond.
