World Series of Poker Europe - Day 2, September 7th, 2007

Things in Western Europe seem to be a good bit smaller and at times more expensive then they would be in other parts of the world. Anybody who was alive to experience the wonders of the Renault Le Car will have some sense of this, especially if they were the sort of person who cut their driving teeth behind the wheel of a Mustang. Those who follow the sport of Soccer (or football; the terminology depends on if you are a soccer mom from Cleveland or a Hooligan from Wales) will have to agree that David Beckham was an expensive import from England. Conventional wisdom says we could have gotten three Pele's and a handful of South American rioters for what was paid to bring the sixth Spice Girl to California.

As long as we are talking about things that are small, European, and expensive, we have to bring up the topic of Kate Moss. She is petite enough to qualify as a Shetland human, and definitely not as cheap as the United State's Britney Spears. There are a number of people in the poker world who think this paradigm also applies to the European version of the World Series of Poker.

As of the writing of this column the final table has been set for the first event of the WSOP Europe. Unlike the WSOP proper that boasts dozens of events, the first European branch of this franchise has only three events to speak of. Don't think of it as small though, we prefer the term "intimate".

As long as we are discussing intimate encounters, this would be a good time to mention that Jennifer Harman is currently leading the pack of the £2,500 H.O.R.S.E event. The poker pixie is by no means a sure bet to win the first WSOP Europe bracelet ever. Her lead is tenuous at best as Yuval Bronshtein is snapping at her heels with 185.500 chips and Kirk Morrison is within a stone's throw of her with 172,500. Jennifer's 204,000 chips are hardly safe going into Day 3.

Even though the tournament is smaller, the buy-ins are more expensive when the conversion to pounds is factored in. Tomorrow, on September 8th, somebody will be in the record books as the first person to win a WSOP Europe bracelet. It should be interesting.
