Today, July 14th, is Day 5 of the 38th annual World Series of Poker's Main Event, Event #55, the "Dream Machine." It is now time to talk about Humberto Brenes.
Brenes is a 55 year old businessman from Costa Rica, but most poker fans don't care about that. They care whether or not Brenes is at a table they are watching, and they care a lot - because Humberto is one of those guys you either love or hate when you are playing poker. At the time of this writing, Brenes is sitting around the bottom quarter of chip stacks in the main event, holding on to his shot at a first time main event win. One group of poker fans who love Humberto are poker writers, because where "the Shark" goes, there is action, drama, silliness, and definitely something to report.
One story is that Humberto was puzzled at why there were so many cameras at his table, when it was pointed out to him that Tobey Maguire, the actor that played Spiderman, was at his table. Humberto didn't know Tobey was a movie star. Just like during the NBC National Poker Heads-Up Championship he had to ask Huck Seed who Paul Wasika was, the man who was a runner up in last year's WSOP Main Event. It seems like Humberto lives in his own reality, and it works for him.
Whether he is wearing two pairs of sunglasses on top of each other or sporting a jester hat, Humberto is always making a statement with his mode of dress and his behavior. His card protector, a small shark toy, is always on hand to make a run at his opponents' chips when Humberto moves all in, crying out "the chark, the chark!"
His antics are always good natured, but he does get on some players' nerves. He is often in other players' personal space, and he is often very loud at the table. Whether or not Brenes is trying to put his opponents on tilt, he sometimes does just by being himself. Compared to other players, whose obnoxious behavior includes acting threatening, cursing and disparaging the play of others at the table, perhaps those irritated at Bernes' behavior can cut "the Shark" a little slack.
