Today, July 15th, is Day 6 of the 38th annual World Series of Poker's Main Event. There will be two more days before it is all over, but tomorrow is a day off to give the lucky final table players 24 hours to rest, recoup, reconnoiter and restore before playing for over $8 million.
Speaking of over $8 million, now would be a good time to look at the payout structure for this year' main event. $22,019,901 is the prize pool for the final table, where the biggest loser will leave in 9th place with $525,934. The next jump is a "measly" $60k, 8th paying $585,699. 7th is a more significant jump of over $120k to $705,229. $250k later is 6th, paying $956,243, and the first true WSOP Main Event millionaire will be 5th place with $1,255,069. A $600k jump pays the 4th place finisher $1,852,721, followed by an incredible $1.2 million jump to $3,048,025 for 3rd. A $1.8 million jump makes 2nd $4,840,981, and first nearly doubles that at $8,250,000.
And what about those players who bust before the "final table bubble?" What will players in positions 10th down into the twenties have to settle for? The range for 19 - 27 place finishers pays $333,490, 16 - 18 pays $381,302, 13 - 15 pays $429,114 and for the last three players before the final table is set, a payday of $476,926 is theirs.
It is easy to see how important play is today. It would be hard to imagine players complaining on picking up three hundred grand off of a ten grand investment (a return of 30 times their investment), but then again if they could just hold on a bit longer, they could be playing for millions. For many a few hundred grand, when invested or spent wisely, could alter the course of their lives for the better. A few million would certainly do it.
Don't expect to see too many crazy risks at the table today, with so much hanging in the balance.
