2007 WSOP Diary: Day 38, July 8th

Usually if you are a guy who is spending a weekend in Vegas and your activities for the evening include an attractive woman, three Queens, and eliminations, chances are your night has gone in a very weird direction. However if you are Frank Schram this situation simply means you have used a three-of-a-kind to eliminate Vanessa Rousso from the World Series of Poker's Main Event.

Vanessa was having a pretty good day up until she ran into Frank and his threesome of two-dimensional lady friends. She was holding her own in the tournament, and her stack of chips was on the happy side of average. On the hand versus Schram, Vanessa was all in and holding an encouraging three-of-a-kind of her own. She had a triplet of fives and though this is far from an unbeatable hand, it is usually one that wins much more often than it loses. Luck just wasn't on her side. The same flop that gave her three fives matched up well with Frank's pocket Queens and served to oust her from the tournament.

Vanessa was clearly upset by the outcome, but handled the disappointment like a true pro and was nothing but gracious in defeat.

Speaking of things that are highly disappointing, Jose Canseco was playing in the Main Event on this day. He was competeing in a hand against Amir Vahedi when the former baseball embarrassment flopped a straight. Jose's entire athletic career was based on working outside the rules and bumping up his performance by illegal means, so a reasonable response to his straight would have been for his opponent to insist on a full cavity search to ensure that there were no extra cards hidden anywhere on Jose's person. No such search happened and the former slugger smugly continued with the hand.

There are a lot of things Karma doesn't like. Dinosaurs, spotted owls, and John Wayne Bobbitt are apparently on her list of undesirables. Ms. Karma apparently dislikes baseball cheaters as well. Amir Vahedi caught a spade on the river that completed his flush. The bad beat ruined Canseco's day and ended his Main Event hopes.

After a day where a lot of world class players could empathize with the crew of the Titanic after hitting the iceberg, who would have guessed that Jason "George Costanza" Alexander would still be alive in the Main Event. As of this moment he is paddling the lifeboat into the next round while much more decorated players are hanging up their funny hats and sunglasses in Davy Jones's locker.
