Montel Williams may be a world class humanitarian and all around good guy, but perhaps he should stick to consoling people on his show who happen to the mother, grandmother, and aunt of their own newborn baby. He was one of the participants of Day 1B of the World Series of Poker's Main Event. To this point in the tournament he is simply something that better players access when they need to bump up their own stacks of chips. In other words, things have not been going well for talk show host and MS research advocate. At this point in time of the tournament he would be hard pressed to finance a glass of Mr. Pib from the bar with the amount of chips he currently has (if the little plastic disks actually represented money). If his losing ways continue he will soon be joining Isabelle Mercier and Kathy Liebert in the losers lounge. Of course the idea of being firmly between that particular duo while licking the tournament inflicted wounds is the sort of thing that would inspire one to new heights of bad play.
Usually when people suggest that there is something funny going on at a poker table, they are referring to a person who is dealing from the bottom of the deck or a player who has 52 aces stuffed up their sleeve. On Day 1B of the Main Event, players thinking there is something funny at their table were probably playing alongside comedian Norm McDonald.
Over the past few years Norm has begun to make a name for himself in the sport of poker. Unlike some celebrities who use a pair of double D breasts to get the attention of the poker world, Mr. McDonald has carved a reputation with solid play (of course if he could fill out a bra, Norm is the type who would use that to his advantage).
Despite having some skills in the game, Norm McDonald found himself in the place where most Hollywood celebrities wind up when they try to climb the Main Event Mountain: as debris at the base of the obstacle. He was eliminated along with pros like Erik Seidel and Annie Duke. At least he is in good company, though we doubt any of them are laughing.
