2007 WSOP Diary: Day 31, July 1st

Most of us are familiar with the game "musical chairs". Fundamentally the competition involves music, people marching around a bunch of seats, and a mad scramble for someplace to sit when the song stops. After everyone has grabbed a seat, the person left without a chair is eliminated. It appears this is the model that the U.N. was built on. The game takes on a whole new meaning when the music happens at the World Series of Poker, and someone is about to be dragged from their chair.

During Event 49, a pack of Brazilians who had taken a break from yelling "Goooooooooooooalllllllllll" during soccer matches, and assaulting fans of opposing teams with everything from bricks to those big foam fingers that are all the rage, caused a stir at the World Series of Poker. These were the fans of poker pro, Leandro Pimentel. The most surreal actions of the day were when they would sing before Pimentel eliminated a player from the tournament. At times the songs were premature, such as when Todd Lundwall caught a lucky river card to stay alive against the player from Brazil, but overall the thoroughly engaged fans made for a highly entertaining side spectacle to the poker that was being played.

Leandro Pimentel has made it to the final table. It should be interesting to see what happens if he wins.

Event 48 found its conclusion and another new champion is crowned. Rafi Amit beat Lenny Martin for the 2-7 Triple Draw championship. Amit was not the only bracelet winner of the day - Blair Rodman was crowned the Holdem champ of Event 47. He managed to outlast Amato Galasso, Klein Kim Bach, and the sentimental favorite of the tournament: Anna Wroblewski.

The countdown is beginning. After July 2nd there will only be a handful of non-Main Event bracelets left. The big championship is now in site.
