2007 WSOP Results |
The first event at the World Series of Poker Europe was won by a guy from Germany. Today an Italian was crowned the champion of Event 2. The last time folks from these two nations dominated a European struggle, well... really bad things happened. Seeing as neither of these winners has dreams of world domination or a tasteless little mustache, we think the EU you are safe.
Earlier today Dario Alioto kicked the aces of Istvan Novak and Tony G to take the £5,000 Pot Limit Omaha event. He joins Thomas Bihl in the winner's circle of this historic European WSOP encounter, and becomes only the third player from Italy to wear a World Series of Poker bracelet without having to take it in payment for a defaulted loan.
This 22-year-old Sicilian has about as much name recognition internationally as Johnny Spirit (for those outside the State of Michigan, Johnny is a local celebrity who is best known for wearing only a cape, body paint, and a pair of briefs to Michigan State University football games). Despite the fact that Dario is somewhat of a localized phenomenon, the entire poker world got a good, healthy dose of what a focused descendant of the old empire can do. Look for this gentleman to be a rising star in the sport of poker.
The final standings are:
1 Dario "Ryu Alioto £234,390
2 Istvan Novak £137,280
3 Tony "Tony G" Guoga £94,380
4 Daniel Callaghan £65,520
5 Antoine Arnault £49,530
6 Sherkhan Farnood £38,220
7 Sampo Lopponen £30,420
8 Andrew Bloch £22,020
9 Joe Razaghi £16,380
