Some things end with a bang. Anybody who has ever been out on a third date with Tara Reid or Lindsy Lohan can enthusiastically attest to this. Other things end with a whimper. Those who have seen "The Crying Game" can bear witness to this other alternate, much less pleasant reality. What a night with Ms. Lohan and one with the surprisingly well endowed "girl" from the 90's most shocking movie have in common is that regardless of how, they both conclude in a definitive way. One involves smoking a cigarette and hoping the pictures come out well; the other ends with years of therapy and some mercifully repressed memories. Event 41 didn't have the sort of ending where spectators knew exactly what to do, but it did end.
Tony Korfman and Ernest Bennett were the last two players standing at the end of Event 41, the seniors No Limit Holdem tournament. Instead of getting bogged down in a drawn out battle for the bracelet the men instead had a short conversation. After a handshake Ernest Bennett was declared the winner without a hand even being dealt between the two.
At this point in time nobody can really say what words passed between the two men. Perhaps Korfman, who was behind in the chip count, didn't see a point of taking the tournament to an ultimate conclusion that would probably be the same as if he just surrendered. Maybe the two of them were just plain tired and decided the winner with a game of rock, paper, scissors. Regardless of how it happened, Ernest Bennett is the champion.
This is the sort of ending that leaves those watching confused on how to feel. On one hand they feel a little cheated because it would have been fun to see these two men play it out to the end; on the other hand, there was such civility in the act that it was hard not to admire it. It's best to just call it an ending, try not to over think it, and congratulate the winner.
