2007 WSOP Event 37 - Pot Limit Holdem $2,000

The final, heads-up encounter between Greg Hopkins and Jason Newburger had all the makings of a Rookie movie. The competitors were equally matched playing a highly competitive one-on-one game of poker that would end with one of them being the champion. Each had thrown some big punches at the other, and took the occasional beating. As the end drew close it was still anyone's game. Really the only difference between this and a Sly Stallone boxing movie was that there was no annoying (yet strangely inspirational) music playing at the climactic moments, and neither of these guys look like they could successfully take a punch from an 8 year old girl scout, let alone Apollo Creed. Except for those factors it was exactly the same.

At the last hand both players were given good hole cards. Greg was dealt a pair of Jacks and Jason was working with a K-Q, both spades. Newburger started the action by raising the pot. Greg wasn't about to be out done, and he re-raised. This gave Jason some encouragement. Being a "the glass is half full" kind of guy, he had remembered that Hopkins had lost a lot of chips recently in situations just like this. Newburger moved all in.

Greg Hopkins may or may not be a "the glass is half empty" sort of person, but his glass must have been full of something that gave him the sort of confidence to call Jason's all in bet.

The flop came out as a 9-10-2. Jason was just one Jack away from hitting a straight. Of course seeing as two of those Jacks were sitting in Greg's hand, Newburger's fortunes were not looking good. Neither the turn nor the river was of any use to Jason and he lost the hand.

Much like the end of Rocky II, when the end was still in doubt after both boxers fell to the canvas, the chip count between the two was so close going in to this hand that it wasn't immediately clear the match was over. After a brief verification that Jason was indeed all in and had nothing left, Greg Hopkins was awarded the championship.
