Usually any product that has the words “Girl’s Guide” built right into the title, it is going to be something that explains to women how to make guys give up burgers, their easy chairs, Sunday football, and anything else that separates us from our shoe obsessed opposite numbers. This particular DVD is both good, bad, and at times downright perplexing; and don’t mean in the wonderful “feminine mystique” way. Instead of jumping right into the bits that have us scratching our heads, we will start with the part of this product that really grinds my gears.
In all seriousness, but putting the words “Girl’s Guide” into the title, it gives the impression that somehow the game changes for people whose engines are fueled by estrogen instead of testosterone. The game is gender neutral, and the cards are not going to discriminate against a person, one way or another, based on whether or not their genitalia falls into the innie" or outie category. Seeing as Annie has always been one of the most vocal critics about gender separation in the game of poker, this small hypocrisy tainted my opinion of the product before I opened the package.
Now for the good bits of the product; the advice that is offered on this DVD is fundamentally sound, and will give anyone, guy or gal, a good intellectual foundation to build their poker knowledge on. It explains the rules, strategy, odds calculating, the importance of table position, and etiquette. So those who purchase this product will be getting value for their money.
Now for the confusing part; I got déjà vu watching this DVD. I feel like I have seen it somewhere before; oh yes…just about any other Annie Duke CD. Annie doles out pretty much the exact same advice as she has in her other products, with almost the exact same setting and clothes. The opening is different from her other DVDs, but after that, it gets down into being the same product. If you do not have a good introductory DVD for poker, this is a good one to get. If you already have one of her instructional DVDs, then you probably have all the information that she covers on this one.
