Fifty-Five

Playing Fifty-Five

If your regular poker night at home with your friends has become a festival of yawns and predictable playing habits - perhaps it is long overdue that you consider surprising your poker buddies with a little variety. The poker variety called Fifty-Five is something fun and new that will not be completely foreign to anyone who knows how to play Guts. Fifty-Five is basically a meshing of Guts and traditional poker.

The game can be played with anywhere from three to eight players. The thing to remember with this variety is that the five card is always going to be wild. The initial deal takes place with five cards dealt to each player.

After the initial deal each player displays whether or not they want to stay in the hand by holding up a chip in their hand. Anyone who shows a chip in this manner then receives two additional cards. Now the players who chose to remain in will have a hand of seven cards. From these seven cards each player attempts to create their best possible five-card hand.

From here, if two or more participants remain in the hand, the player who ends up with the best hand wins the pot and losers must match it. When just one player is in, that person has to beat out the top eight cards from the deck - if he does, he wins the pot thus ending the game. If he fails to beat the deck, he must match the pot. The game carries on until just one player stays in who can beat the deck.

The fun is that the game lingers on and the pot just continues to grow whenever more than two players remain in or if the one remaining player loses to the deck.
