So you have found your way into the World Series of Poker. It doesnt matter how you got there, whether putting up the ten thousand dollars or winning your way there in a satellite tournament, what matters is you are there. You will now be playing against a field that resembles, in numbers, one of the armies fielded by Alexander the Great (without the sharp implements and dedication to physical fitness of course). How do you prepare for this challenge? If most of your play has been online, I would suggest finding some carbon based players to play against. This will help get you used to the atmosphere that is inherent when the opponents are three feet away, instead of an electronic signal from hundreds of miles away. You will also want to get some practice playing multi-table tournaments, preferably large ones. The strategy for this sort of tournament is different than when you are simply playing a ring game. A player must get used to protecting their stack while eliminating other players. They must also learn when to just sit back and let players eliminate each other. Lastly, some high stakes single table tournaments should be part of your practice routine. If you are fortunate enough to make it to the final table, this will help you be prepared when millions of dollars are on the line, and only one tables worth of people stand between you and the prize. In short, learn not to blink when the game goes from thousands in a battle royal to just a few competitors playing high stakes chicken. There are things you cant practice or prepare for. Luck is one of them. Luck becomes a huge part of this sort of tournament. The only thing you can do is to put yourself in a good position to win. Make it so your opponents need luck to beat you.Article of the Day Archive
