When you hold a poker tournament in Las Vegas, poker pros are going to play. It may not be the biggest event, or the most advertised, or boast the largest cash prizes, but as long as it is worth the effort of driving down the street to play a game you love and possibly add to your bankroll, the pros are going to be there. Such was the case with the recently held National Poker League Vegas Open, where some of the biggest names in poker showed up to play.
The event wasn't small by any means, with a $15,000 buy in to the main event (50% more than the main event at the World Series of Poker) and a prize pool of over $800,000, it was worth the drive.
Players like Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, John Juanda, David Singer, Jen Harman, Allen Cunningham and Gavin Smith showed up to play. 2006 World Series of Poker main event champion Jamie Gold was there as well. The players took their seats at the beautiful Venetian Card Room, which had a special feature for those not playing in the event. Railbirds could stop by a special TV station that broadcast the action. This was probably put in place as much for the privacy of the players as the fun of the railbirds. The pros and the average players alike were all in competing for a more than $300k prize for first place, which eventually went to Allen Cunningham.
