Setting Goals is One of the Unwritten Rules for Poker Success

Goal Setting

Today’s poker tip isn’t so much how to play poker, if you are reading this, chances are you have a good grasp on the basics of playing holdem. Today’s poker tip is about the mentality with which poker players should approach the game. We have been lectured to the point of nauseum about how to play poker and what to do under cetin circumstances. What we don’t hear a heck of a lot about are some of the unwritten poker rules that will help poker players be more successful. One of the most important is to learn to set goals when playing holdem or any other type of poker.

We all have goals for where we want our poker game to be. When we are talking about goals, we do not mean those “pie in the sky” aspirations like deciding your ultimate goal is to win the WSOP Main Event, or commit crimes against nature with Joanna Krupa. While those are admirable objectives, they probably won’t happen. We are talking about the day to day water marks that help keep us on course as poker players. The most important of which is to set a reasonable hourly expectation of winnings.

People like Durrr can win and lost hundreds of thousands on a hand of holdem, most of us are not nearly at that level. If you are just starting out, set a goal of winning £20.00 per hour. Let’s face it; if you can’t consistently reach this mark at the low limit rooms, chances are you are not ready to move up in limits, let alone take on the WSOP (or the lovely Ms. Krupa). Set your goals, make them realistic, and keep them consistent with your level of play. This will help you stay on track.
