Once you have figured out how to play, another really important question is where to play. Let's face it, once most of us figured out the wonders of solid food, it wasn't long before we learned that there was a huge difference between Ruth's Cris Steak House and a place where your yell your order into a clown's mouth.
If Phil Hellmuth walked into a casino and sat down at a table with Daniel Negreanu, Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey, Annie Duke, and Greg Raymer, he would look a lot less dominant than if he was playing against Larry, Curly, Moe, and Shemp.
Figuring out a good place to play is much easier online than at a live casino. The most important criteria when looking for a good, profitable table is usually listed right in the lobby. What you will be looking for is a table that has the following:
- A high percentage of people who see the flop. You should be looking for a room where this percentage is above 30%.
- The average pot size should be at least 10 times the size of the big blind.
While there won't be a sign in the lobby saying, "big fish at this table" simple observation of the game for a few hands before jumping in should give you a taste of who is weak at the table.
If while you are observing you identify some weak players, do the following: make a note in about them using one of the site's tools or an old school pen and paper. This will be good for future reference - especially if the site you are playing at has a "search" function. It is nice to know you can find this pigeon when you need a sure thing to help your bankroll. Second, try to get a seat to the left of the weak players at the table. This will give you position on them and help you further exploit their lack of skill at the game.
