Tournament Thievery

Tournament Thievery

Everyone likes the idea of robbing the table of the blinds. Not only do you get a little financial boost, but there is certain sort of emotional satisfaction that comes from making everyone else fold. When playing in a tournament, what are the best conditions to attack the blinds in the hopes of stealing them right out from under everyone's noses?

Position is the key factor when it comes to stealing the blinds. If you are sitting in the dealer position, or the cutoff (the person directly to the right of the dealer) then your rear end is in the right chair to attempt a steal. You can try to steal from the early position, and hope the shock factor will give everyone pause before calling you, but chances are if a late position player has anything that resembles a legitimate hand, they will be calling your bet.

While most will agree that late positions are a good time to go for the steal, where you are sitting in space isn't the only factor. Where you are in time is also important when it comes to pot thievery. During the early goings of most tournaments, when most people's stacks are big and the blinds are low, it is harder to steal. People simply have too much money to let you get away with it, and the blinds are not debilitating enough to get players thinking economically yet.

The best time to steal is when your opponents' stacks are 20 to 25 times the size of the big blind.

Remember stealing in a tournament is not a two-dimensional act that only has to do with space, but also with time. Be sure position and timing are both on your side if you want to steal successfully.

  Good Luck!
