Had Prime Minister Chamberlain taken out Hitler when he was small and relatively weak instead of accepting social invitations from him and re-writing laws so that German U-boats could legally stalk their prey in England's coastal waters, the world would be a very different place today. In short, the best way to deal with a maniac is cut him off at the knees before he can kick you in the family jewels.
Maniacs are everywhere in the game of poker. While most of them will never be responsible for an attempted genocide, they are still a pain in the rear to play against. The best way to put a halt to a maniac is to stop him before he gets started.
Maniacs like to be the person who drives the action in a hand. This gives them a feeling of control, lets them believe that they are the bully at the table. They rarely know what to do when somebody stands up and punches them in the nose. Now, we don't mean you should physically assault your particular maniac, but take control of the hand before the flop.If the maniac raises, re-raise. This will confuse them because they rarely have to react to somebody else's overt aggression at the table.
Raising before the flop is a favorite tactic of the maniac, but unless they have something up their sleeve, chances are they don't have a premium, or even a good hand every time around.Chances are pretty good that your re-raise will catch them with a mediocre hand and leave them making financial decisions based on the strength of their hole cards. This is not a position they do well in.
If you find yourself with position on the maniac, and good pair of hole cards to boot, go for the throat with your re-raise.If you are playing No Limit, make the raise huge. The maniac will probably fold rather than challenge someone who is comfy pushing them around.
Good Luck!
