Playing with Gusto

Aggression is a demonized trait nowadays. People who are highly aggressive are derided as troglodytes, primitive, mean, insensitive, or any other adjective that suggests they are bad people for wanting to succeed. The one word that is not often attached to them, but is accurate so far is the word "winner".

When approaching a hand of poker, your strategic default setting should be a bias toward aggression. Position and the cards you are holding will of course be factors in how you play. For example, if you are holding a pair of Jacks in an early position, you may limp in with that hand and wait to see what everyone else does. If you have those same cards in the late position, you may raise.

Or if you are in the Big Blind position and holding a pair of Aces, or Ace/King you may want to go on the offensive before the flop and re-raise if somebody decides to test you with a raise.

Outside of specific instances, some general benefits to aggressive play is that this style adds potency to your marginal hands. More passive opponents will lay down better hands than what you are holding instead of challenging you. It will also result in more pots. Aggressive play tends to spur a lot of action. Where there is a lot of action, big pots are sure to follow.

Do not fear aggressive play, embrace it. Do so with smarts though. Aggression for aggression's sake is a good way to lose a lot of money.

  Good Luck!
