When you sit down to play a game of poker, there should be two games going on - the obvious, immediate game, and a second, long term, secret game. Poker is a long game, one that is played over much more than a few sessions, and the only true opponent is yourself. Can you control destructive tendencies, can you learn to read opponents, can you manage your money, can you make the correct moves time and time again regardless of the apparent results? Working towards all of these goals is the essence of the secret poker game.
Say, you are in a regular game and there is an opponent that always seems to take your chips. You find yourself dreading to see this person at the game, and if you lose any chips to them at all it typically puts you on tilt. You should make it your goal to figure this player out, to counteract the spell he or she has over you, and turn the tables. When you sit down at any particular session, you of course are playing to win, but you are also playing to learn; and in poker, there is a never ending list of things to learn.
It has been said many times that Texas Holdem poker, in particular, is a game that takes moment to learn and a lifetime to master. That is what the secret game is all about - the mastery. Set objectives that go beyond collecting all the chips, and make progress every time you play, and you will be a victor regardless of whether or not you win.
