Fold the Sow's Ear

Fold the Sow's Ear

A sow's ear can be made into so many things. Compost is a good example of what happens to the ear when all the bacon has been cut off of the pig's carcass. According to some news agencies, hot dogs are another thing the ear becomes, but most people try not to think about things like that. This is all a rather gross thought, but the truth is that anybody who thinks you can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear probably also thinks making rude noises with their armpit will help them get dates.

The lack of versatility with the ear from a dead sow is a pretty good example for somebody who has a garbage hand and is thinking their brilliant poker skills will be able to turn this dog of a hand into a winner. Let's be blunt, it won't.

There are a number of factors that go into making a bad hand a winner. First of all, your position at the table is part of the formula. Showing aggression from the Big Blind, such as calling a raise, or re-raising a raise, may knock people out of the hand due to the shock value of this bold move from so compromised a position. There will probably be one or two players who have enough confidence in their cards to stay in the hand. In that case, with a hand like unsuited 2-8, chances are you are beat.

The smarter move is to lay down your bad hands before you invest any real money in them and wait for better treatment from the deck.
