Dead Money Plays

Dead Money Plays

Taking liberties with the dead is something that most associate with Mary Shelly's Dr. Frankenstein or Marilyn Manson's love life. It is also a strategy that involves players attacking the dead money at the table.

The obvious part to this strategy involves attacking the blinds. The people who are forced to make a bet at the beginning of a hand have to put the money in regardless of what cards they are holding in their hand. In a large percentage of circumstances these people just wind up folding at some point and losing their bet. This is why it is called dead money, there is no live hand around to defend it. The most advantageous position to attack this dead money from is a late position. In most cases the person sitting at the button will be the most aggressive person at the table in going after the blinds, but what most people forget is that the tables can be turned on this guy.

Let's say that you are sitting in the Small Blind. The Big Blind is the type of player who folds unless he has a premium hand, the person on the button is an experienced player. The big blind's money is probably dead, but considering the fact that the person on the button is going to lower the quality of the cards they are willing to raise with because of their positional advantage, their money may be dead too.

When the raise comes in an attempt to steal the blind, re-raise from your small blind position and test the button's nerve (and their cards). In most cases you will find that they didn't have the cards to back up their bet, and were simply betting their position.

  Good Luck!
