Big Money at Low Limits

Big Money at Low Limits

Many beginner poker players cut their teeth at Holdem by playing at low limits. They feel it affords them a great deal of protection against their inevitable mistakes and messups. They need to learn their fundamentals, and they don't want to lose a lot of money in the process. Low limit Holdem keeps them protected and allows them to do this.

Along the way, they can get pretty good. Good enough to feel ready to graduate up to pot limit and later, no limit Holdem, but before they do so, they have to make sure they can make strong money playing at low limits. The reason for this is that they want to be able to fall back into low limit playing to regenerate their bankroll if they have a bad loss.

They find that the key to making good money at low limits is all pacing. There's a simple upper limit to the size of any pot, no matter how good your hand is. Therefore, you don't want to worry about getting the full value of each hand, since it is negligibly higher than what you would get if you just tried to win with the hand as quickly and soundly as possible. This means you want to be winning a lot at the flop and the turn. Scaring out limpers is a definitely good thing in low limit games, since they're simply not going to add much to the pot anyway. Slow players need to have their play revealed early.

To make big money at low limits, you have to rush the game and force the players to cede pots to you.
