Let's face it: the wide open, aggressive style of poker has been a dominant topic in the current poker climate. This is much of the style that dominates internet play. Fortunes are quickly won, lost, and won again as players throw big bets at each other like a couple of nations who have decided to test the theory of mutually assured destruction. Quietly playing in the background though, are the uber-conservative players who are still going to dominate some of the tables of both live and online poker rooms. So how do you play against such kind of players?
First thing to consider is the nature of a tight player. Every time these guys put a bet in, it feels to them like somebody has just taken a piece of their spleen out with a Black and Decker drill. In other words, they don't like to bet and will generally only make a run at the pot when they have the sort of cards that will probably win.
You can take advantage of this nature by playing exactly opposite of how they conduct themselves. If you play more aggressively, they will generally fold.
Aggression for the sake of aggression is kind of brainless way to play. You can bluff a conservative player, but the best bluffs come when the board is working for you. There are a number of cards that scare timidly tight players out of the pot. These are of course the overcards like Aces, Kings, Queens, and Jacks. When these show up on the board, it will add legitimacy to your bluff and the tight players will consistently err on the side of caution and fold.
The drawback to playing with these players is that when you do have a legitimately strong hand, chances are you will not get full value for your cards. This is balanced by the fact that you can save yourself some money with the knowledge that when they do get around to betting it is because they are holding strong cards. At that point you can act accordingly whether that means folding, or, if you have a good hand yourself, getting more money into the pot from this player and taking your chances at the showdown.
Playing against tight players is not going to deliver the big pots that playing against aggressive players is going to yield, but the predictability of the conservative type means that you can make a small, but steady amount of money playing against them.
Good Luck!
