If you are playing Texas Holdem heads up, it may be a good idea to bluff pretty often. However it wouldn't be right to give up totally on one of the most powerful weapons in poker. The best thing you can try is to use semi-bluff instead. When playing heads up, mediocre hands like 5c 7h or 3d 3h have much more chances to win the pot. The reason is simple – you have only one opponent to beat, so if you hold cards like 5c 7h that can develop into a straight or two pair, you can play them aggressively after the flop hits – betting and raising as if you hit your two pair or straight. If you hold a small pair like 3d and 3h, you can start being aggressive before the flop – and bet as if you hold a pair of queens or kings. Remember though, when you are semi-bluffing, you want to be aggressive as early as possible – to make your opponent fold out of the way instead of becoming lucky at the river. |

Poker is fun and entertaining, but let's not forget that the reason many people play poker is to win money. And while it's true that you improve your game when you play against more skillful players, when you want to actually win money, you should forget about your ego and play with opponents whose game level is below yours. Poker television has made No Limit Texas Holdem more popular than many sitcoms, and this means there are many newcomers playing at thousands of virtual poker tables trying their luck. When you want to join a poker table, take a few minutes and see how your potential opponents are playing. Fish are usually easy to spot – as they approach each hand with the sort of daredevil flair that they see when they watch television. But this is done without the necessary experience, so if you figure out their playing style, you could enjoy several big payoffs. |

When you are facing a tight player, the first thing to consider is that those guys don't like to bet. And you can take advantage of this – in general, they will fold when you play aggressively. Of course you can bluff, and many times your bluffs will work when you play against a conservative opponent, but the best bluffs happen only when the board goes your way. Your conservative opponent can figure you out and become less conservative – and that could mean less pots won by you. Also you must remember that when your hole cards are great and your opponents are tight, many times you will not get full value for your cards if you are aggressive. In that case, slowplaying is the only right strategy for you if you want to score a big pot. |

It happens to all of us, somebody bets into you out of left field, or raises your bet. If you are holding a hand that you believe may only be the second best hand at the table, most players’ natural inclination is to fold. Before you surrender the hand to your opponent take a good look at his stack. This will often be able to tell you more about whether or not they are bluffing than any facial tick or profuse sweating. If this is a cash game, and you see somebody with a small stack displaying this sudden flash of aggression, you can believe you are now facing a legit, formidable hand.

Those who make it their business to be familiar with obscure, theoretical laws not only need to get out more and find a nice girl, but they will also be aware of the law of diminishing returns. Basically this concept supports the idea that there can be too much of a good thing and that eventually the whole thing will eventually blow up in your face. A lot of players who see a pair of Aces or two Kings show up as their hole cards immediately start slowplaying in order to keep as many people as possible in the hand in order to help the pot grow.

Usually when the term "faking it" is tossed around there is an unsatisfied wife and a marriage counselor involved in the mix somewhere. Besides this rather uncomfortable reality, faking it is also a way to make money when playing poker. As we all know, faking it is called bluffing in poker, and it is something everyone of us do: some better than others. There is an art to carrying off a bluff, and you see it employed by professionals time and again on national television and in some of the sport’s biggest tournaments.
