It doesn't happen often in a game of No Limit Holdem, but when it does, it is poker equivalent of Keira Knightley banging on a random gentleman's door and demanding the sort of activity that one usually has to give up their credit card number to see online. For the ladies who are reading this article, just replace Ms. Knightley's name with Antonio Banderas or imagine you have won the golden ticket to Pradas manufacturing plant. What we are really talking about is when a player gets a pair of Aces dealt to them before the flop.
In a game of No Limit Holdem, having a pair of Aces as your hole cards means that you have a green light to bet the contents of your wallet, the mortgage, and the kid's college fund before the flop. The reason a player will do this is not only to take full advantage of the exceptionally powerful cards that have been dealt, but also to protect those cards. The aggressive betting telegraphs the pair of Aces, but this is one time you want no mystery regarding the cards you are holding. Pocket Aces is a stealing hand, not one built to take to a showdown.
If you have two Aces, you are the undisputed leader until the flop happens. After that anything can happen, so the smart thing is to make the flop so expensive that the drawing hands and smaller pairs will not consider the price it will cost them to see the next cards worth the risk.
Remember, a pair of pre-flop Aces is still just a pair. While no other pair can beat you, letting drawing hands hang about, or giving smaller pairs the opportunity to become three-of-a-kind is a good way to waste your pocket aces.
