Using a Human Shield

Using a Human Shield

Anybody who says they are perfectly content being the medium sized or short stack at the table is lying out one of their more obnoxious orifices. If you are in a tournament, and you are a medium sized stack at a table with a really big stack, you are definitely playing from behind. The big stack has the advantage of getting to be the bully at the table while you have to pick and choose your spots to fight. So what do you do in the interim while waiting for a playable hand? You can fold a whole lot of times, or if you are playing at a particularly aggressive table, you could use some of your fellow players as human shields to help knock the big stack down to size.

This strategy will not work at a table where most of the players are tight. You need some people hanging around who will chase your bet like a greyhound after a mechanical bunny. When you are sitting in the early position with a worthless hand before the flop, raise instead of folding. One of three things will probably happen here.

First of all, you might steal the pot. This is the ideal result, but not what you were shooting for.

Second, everyone but the big stack will fold. If this happens, the table was probably not loose enough to try this strategy.

Third, your pre-flop raise combined with modest stack of chips will whet the appetites of some of the people at the table, and they will call your raise. If they are determined to ferret out your intentions, they may even re-raise you. Hopefully the big stack is part of this mix. At that point you fold in an "aw shucks, you got me" sort of way, and let the rest of players involved in the hand fight it out.

Chances are your raise sparked some action, and now bigger stacks will go at it aggressively. If the big stack loses, the whole event put a dent in their chip count. If somebody else loses, they have been equally damaged. Either way, you are in a better position.

A side effect of this action is the next time you bet pre-flop with a high pair or something equally powerful, your opponents will remember your quick fold from when you were employing this "human shield" strategy. They will think you are just trying to steal the pot, and give you action, amplfying the potential earnings for your good cards.

  Good Luck!
