Trapping with a Raise and a Smooth Call

Trapping with a Raise and a Smooth Call

For many the "Smooth Call" is something they do in the sort of bar that serves pink, fruity drinks with tiny umbrellas in them. In the case we are discussing now it usually involves words like "What's your sign" and a lot of tacky, gold jewelry.

In poker, a smooth call is something you do when you are trying to trap your opponent and get them to feed the pot with their hard earned money. For example, in pre-flop betting if you are in the late position, but not the last to act, and you have a pair of aces, you may want to encourage action without tipping off how strong your position is. If you are at an aggressive and loose table, chances are pretty good that somebody will not only call the big blind, but raise. In the event that someone raises, you will re-raise them with your pair of Aces.

If somebody behind you puts a raise on top of your raise, at this point you get into a raising war with them, and you simply call. This will project to the table that your confidence has limit, and that you have reached it. This will embolden anybody who is left in the pot and when they try to put you on a hand, they will not be guessing that you have the best hand in the place.

  Good Luck!
