What is the best way to defend your blinds? Well you could try administering a savage beating, but most civilized societies frown on unprovoked violence at a gaming table. So when beating your opponent silly with the bean dip is suddenly removed as an option, you are left with only a couple of options. You could either surrender and fold your cards or take a carrot/stick approach.
The problem with being in the blinds is that for the most of the hand you are in the worst position at the table. This means that any aggression on your part will be out of position. You could simply lay low and let the people behind you drive the action. This can be especially effective if you are holding something like a suited A/K, or even an AA. If you are in a position of strength, but not slowplaying from your position, your opponents will follow the carrot of weakness that you are projecting and you can suck them into a trap. Barring a bad beat, this can be a very profitable play.
If you have a playable hand like an 8/8, but not an overpowering one, you may want to employ a stick approach, and be aggressive from your place at the table. The fact that you are betting and raising with impunity from an early position will give the people around you pause, and inevitably knock a few of them out of the hand. This will limit the number of players you are facing and give your moderate cards a better chance in a short handed or heads-up situation.
Good Luck!
