The Gap is more than a place to get boring clothes or a really good band from the seventies. The gap is that awkward position you are in at the poker table when somebody in the early position has bet, and there are still people behind you who don't have to act until you have made a commitment one way or the other. Being in the gap is far from the most desirable position at the table, but there are some things you can do here.
The people in the early position probably know that betting will put a sort of unspoken pressure on the rest of the table, especially the unlucky so and so sitting in the gap. It is also a well traveled concept that somebody in the gap usually calls the bet when their hole cards are the bedrock of a legit hand. This perception can be used to deal a blow to the other people at the table.
The gap is both a prime and risky place to bluff. It will show confidence in your cards, which is the sort of thing that may very well scare people out of the pot, but you are also at the mercy of people calling behind you. If they call your bluff, you will find yourself in bad position.
Your table image will take a hit if the bluff is sniffed out by people calling and raising behind you. If you are trying to bluff, and you get called out, the best place to fold is after the flop. If you give up at this point your bluff attempt is camouflaged. A credible case can be made that you started off with a promising hand, but the flop completely neutered your cards.
In most cases the best course of action is to play the gap conservatively and simply go for it when you do have a legit hand, but if you go for the bluff, folding at the point referenced above will save you trouble later.
Good Luck!
