Overacheiving with Trash

Overacheiving with Trash

Looking at today's pop culture, we can see how triumphantly trash can overachieve if given the opportunity. Believe it or not this is a lesson that can be applied to the game of poker.

Let's say your hand has all the value of month old grilled cheese sandwich. Usually you would fold an almost unplayable unsuited 2/7. If you are sitting on the button though, and have a table image that skews to the passive side of the equation, you may be given an opportunity to turn this pig's ear into a silk purse.

Let's say a player raises during a hand when you are on the button. You have some knowledge of this player, and have noticed something in their play that tells you that their raise is probably a bluff. After they raise, only one player behind them calls. This leaves you, the person who raised, and the player who called. We have already established that you believe the raiser is bluffing, and the player behind him only called. This is not indicative of a lot of confidence in their hand. There is a good chance they noticed the same thing about the raiser that you saw, and are also banking on this being a bluff.

What you do at this point is re-raise or go all in. The person who made the original raise is now caught between your all in bet and somebody behind them who has shown a willingness to match their aggression.

Chances are the player in the middle will fold. In most circumstances the other guy will also fold. Unless he is slowplaying, his call of the raise exposed his lack of confidence in the hand he was dealt. Your aggressive action will prompt them to accept that discretion is the better part of valor.

  Good Luck!
