Neutering the Late Position

Neutering the Late Position

The late position is the Avalon of poker table positions. Generally a player sitting in this position will go into a hand, acting aggressive in order to take full advantage of their place at the table. This also means that they may enter the hand with lower quality cards, knowing just how much power the late position gives them. This advantage can be blunted when you are sitting in the big blind. You can test whether they are working with truly legit cards or just playing the position game.

At the end of the first betting round, the big blind is given the opportunity to either check, or respond to what the rest of the table has done. You can almost bet that somebody in a late position has either bet, or raised. The best way to ferret out whether the aggressive activity from the late position is a true representation of what they have, or just a feint, it to act aggressively from the big blind.

Because you are technically acting with aggression that your position just can't justify, you will cause your opponents to think about what they are going to do next. If they don't have a great hand, they will simply fold in most cases. You will either reduce the number of people in the hand, or steal the pot outright.

The problem with this strategy is that if you fold after the flop, it will expose the fact that you were bluffing. Ideally you are doing this with some good hole cards but if you are just trying to represent a much bigger hand than you actually have, you should carry the bluff over to the turn.

  Good Luck!
