Hiding Behind the Maniac Player

Hiding Behind the Maniac Player

In the game of poker knowledge is power. This means that the less your opponents know about you the less power they have. So if you can win pots without having to give away any information about yourself, you are ahead of the game. Very few people are going to fold to you just because you have a winning smile so chances are you're going to have to play some poker in order to get your opponents' money. Every hand you play is a potential intelligence gathering exercise for the rest of the table, so there will be times when you want to hide behind somebody else during a hand. In short, you need a Trojan Maniac.

Maniacs are hyper-aggressive players who have a relatively low standard for what cards are worth betting and raising with. They balance off the fact that they usually have very beatable cards by betting so aggressive that a lot of players won't call them out of fear of being caught in a bad situation if the maniac is actually holding a legitimate hand.

The best way to hide behind the maniac is take an opportunity when you are in a position to act before they do, and limp in with some relatively good cards. The limp will imply weakness and the maniac will jump all over your bet. At this point you just keep pace with their betting. Their behavior will most likely knock most or all of the other players out of the hand, and all you have to do is beat the sort of person who go all the way to the river with nothing more than a pair of fives.

This allows the maniac to do all the playing while you simply get lost in their shadow. The risk to this strategy is that every now and then they will be playing with good cards, and losing to someone who bets out of their mind will be an expensive proposition.
