As we know, in the game of poker all the talk of strategy, bluffing, tells, etc. are about one thing: making money. Most people don't get into casino or competitive poker for the purpose of giving away their paychecks. Anybody who does that sort of thing probably also uses a cactus as a loofa.
If you are playing against a maniac, you will not need an elaborate game plan to get them to put money into the pot. Of course there are still healthy contingents of "by the book" players out there who approach each encounter with caution and are skilled at calculating pot odds. When you have an almost unbeatable hand, these are the players who you are going to have coax into losing money to your cards.
For the sake of example, let's assume your cards are pocket aces. These are of course very powerful hole cards, and if you are playing against the conservative, mathematically oriented sort of players, a big bet before the flop will simply scare them away. All you will get for your Aces are the blinds. So in this case you simply call the big blind. If you are lucky, there is somebody behind you with some confidence that will act a tad more aggressively, but don't count on it.
In this example, the flop has been kind to you. It produced a third Ace and a couple of Jacks. Maniacs would be jumping all over this like Barry Bonds on a hanging curve ball, but your conservative opponents may need some coaxing to put money into the pot.
If you are sitting in an early position, you have two options. You can check in the hopes that somebody either has an Ace and wants full value for their two pair, or somebody has a Jack and is feeling the rush of confidence that comes with a three-of-a-kind. In this case you can perform a check/raise maneuver. If anybody has either of those cards, they will probably stay in the pot in the face of your raise.
Your other option is to simply bet. This may knock some people out of the pot, but if anybody has the aforementioned cards, they will probably not only call your bet, but they may also raise. If they raise, they are trying to do one of two things: (1) get money into the pot (just like you), or (2) convince people to fold.
If you are in the middle position, and somebody has bet, your best play is to simply call the bet. When playing more cautious players this may keep the pot odds favorable enough to coax a bet out of the people to act behind you.
If you are in the late position, call and raise. Regardless of what this does to the pot odds, some people at the table will either think that they have you beat, or that you are using your positional advantage in an attempt to bluff them into folding. That last point will be amplified if you have not yet acted aggressively. You will look like you are using the scare cards on the table for the purpose of running a bluff. For that reason alone they may chase you.
Good Luck!
