Poker Players Should Shut Up While Playing Texas Hold’em

Keep quiet while playing Texas Hold'em

Today’s Texas Hold’em Strategy is about what not to say at the poker table. Texas Hold’em is an information game, the more information that you have ¬– and the better that you are at gathering it – then the better poker player you will be. One of the biggest edges you can get over your opponent is having more information than them about the hand in play. So why would you offer up that information by opening your mouth at the poker table?

If you watch poker on television, you probably have seen table chatter to be an integral part of the game. Poker pros endlessly discuss matters unrelated to the game. But copying these poker pros is not an ideal poker strategy for a beginner. An important tip is to try to talk as little as possible.

The more you talk during a hand of Texas Hold’em, the more information you will let slip. This is exactly why many good poker players try to get their opponents talking. Just picture Daniel Negreanu and his endless banter at the table; this is what most poker experts refer to as “fishing for information.” Some of the most common angles include: Do you want me to call? Will you show me if I fold? But some questions are carefully disguised, such as: How many chips do you have left? This question is asked just as often to goad a player into talking, as it is to actually find out how many chips that player has. A good player knows exactly how many chips you have; getting you to talk is part of their overall poker strategy.

Sometimes, though, what you don’t say is just as informative as what you do say. If you’re under stress and show it, that’s an informative tell. Observant players who are great at reading people – again, like Daniel Negreanu – can gauge almost exactly how strong you think your hand is by how you interact with them. Pauses, inflection, breathing, your eye line – these are all gathered up by your opponent as information about your hand.

Remember, you have the right to remain silent. You are under absolutely no obligation to answer a question from the other players around the poker table. If you don’t have strict control over your emotions, actions and reactions, chances are you will probably want to stay quiet. So keep your mouth shut and you can guarantee that you won’t give away any information.

That is the Texas Hold’em Strategy for today.
