When learning to read poker players, a good poker strategy against those who are newer to the game is to look for physical tells. Physical tells are not only common among newbies, but online poker players who have spent most of their poker careers hiding behind a computer also tend to give away their hands when playing live, casino poker. Because of the nature of online poker, they just never learned to hide their tells.
Somebody once said that the eyes are the window to the soul, while some may debate this, when it comes to how to read poker players, they are certainly a window into your opponent’s hand. If they are staring at the flop like it was a tax form, you can bet that they have taken a swing and missed, thanks to the flop. The long stare means they are trying to cobble together a hand with the cards on the board and the pair in their fist. If that much mental energy needs to be put forth to figure out what to do with their cards, chances are they are holding on to a loser. If there is a King or Ace on the board, and it takes them a few moments of extended staring to do something aggressive, there is a good chance they are employing the poker strategy of bluffing on the scare card.
If your opponent is the chatty sort during casino poker, and suddenly they become distracted, this is also a sign that they have missed with their hand, and are trying to work out what to do next. This is often a precursor of a bluff.
