Betting on Drawing Hands

Poker

Today’s poker strategy involves drawing hands. If there is one thing that most people have learned from their experience in how to play Texas Holdem it’s this; drawing hands are plentiful. This is simply an unpleasant reality. A number of players simply give up when they get these sorts of cards, fold up shop and wait until the next hand. Drawing hands can be played, and played effectively when the circumstances are right. Here is what you should be looking for when thinking about playing your draws.

Position is the key factor when determining when and if to play your drawing hand. While some people try for a surprise attack from extremely early positions, this is not traditionally the best Texas Hold'em strategy one should pursue. Proper poker strategy says you should be in a late position when betting your drawing hand. You don’t want somebody behind you dropping a big raise in the pot and forcing you to support your semi-bluff with more money then necessary.

Let’s say that the guy from the button showed both strength and weakness by making the minimum raise before the flop. You would, of course, call his raise. For the sake of this example let’s say two other players follow you in calling the raise. After the flop you have achieved a middle pair, and you are also four cards into a flush. At this point your Texas Holdem strategy will be to bet about three times the big blind. Your odds of completing your flush are about 2:1, so you’re not in the worst position at the table. If you hit your draw on the turn, you can either put the hammer down or slowplay; this will depend on what sort of players are left in the hand. If you’re playing online, slowplay is generally the best option; play is looser online then in live games.

If you didn’t hit your draw at the turn, obviously you will want to see the river as cheaply as possible. This is where position comes into play. By getting to react to what was done before you, it won’t matter if you show weakness. If you don’t hit your draw on the river, you will probably be folding anyway and if you do hit your draw any weakness your opponents sense may just convince them to feed the pot.

I hope this poker strategy helps!
