Returning to last week’s poker strategy on other poker variations, besides the grand Texas Hold’em, today we will look at a few more poker games.
Many have called Five-Card Draw the best poker variation for understanding poker psychology. It’s a great poker game to choose when you want to return to the roots of poker. For most poker players, it was the very first game that they learned. If you do want to spice it up a bit, throw in a wild card or a second draw to induce more betting.

In Five-Card Draw, players are dealt five cards facedown. Betting starts to the left of the dealer and one round of betting occurs before the first draw. Players then discard unwanted cards to receive new cards from the deck. It is only possible to draw four cards if a player is willing to expose their ace in most versions of this poker game. Players are not allowed to draw all five cards. After the draw, there is another round of betting and the hand is won with the best five-card poker hand at the showdown.
Another popular poker variation is Chinese Poker. It can be very popular among poker professionals where stakes can sometimes escalate to the thousands of pounds. At most major tournaments, you will find the busted players gathered late night in poker halls or hotel rooms playing Chinese Poker.
Players are dealt 13 cards facedown. The players then must organize their cards into three hands (two five-card hands and one three-card hand). The top hand (only one of the five-card hands) must be the player’s strongest hand, followed in strength by the middle hand (the second five-card hand) and then the strongest three-card hand. Players then face-off against each other to see who comes up on top. The best hands are pitted against the other best hands, and the same goes for subsequent hands. A player wins a point for each hand won, plus a bonus point for winning the best of three match-up, for a possible total of four points. Betting stakes are per point.
