Online Poker Tells

son, Ive made a life out of readin peoples faces, and knowin what their cards were by the way they held their eyes. These are the words of the Gambler from the famous song. We all know that in good old days the ability to read other players tells was one of the keys to winning poker in any part of the country. You just watch your opponents eyes or the way he moves his chips, hear his voice trembling or notice a smile he fails to hide, and put him on his hand. Just like this: if you are a good psychologist, it means you are a successful gambler.

Yes, it used to be like this. But nowadays the situation has changed a lot. Even if you have a Ph. D. degree in psychology you may put it where your mouth is when playing online. That is one of the main shortcomings of online poker you cant see your opponent. But dont believe those who say there are no tells in online poker. No way. There are plenty of them. You only have to be smart enough to distinguish them.

Quick Movements And Delays:

You cant see WHO your opponents are, still you always know WHAT they are doing. That is pretty much. The most vivid online tell is the time that a player needs to choose an action.

Every online poker room offers you a possibility to make a decision before your turn comes. All players can click call any raise any, check/fold etc. Different people use this option for different reasons. Some play poker at their business hours and have other things to do. Some just surf on the net while other players are acting and it is to boring for them to just sit and wait. And some play at several tables and have to think about several different hands at the same time. You can be pretty sure when a player uses this option: he acts in less than a second in this case. You can use this tell to estimate the relative value of your hand.

If your opponent chooses raise any he obviously has a strong hand and you want to continue the game only in case you have the nuts. If you see that a player instantly checks, he probably has a trash hand and wants to get a free card. Try to raise him and see what will happen. You may blow him out of the game by just outbluffing. However, he might be using the tactics of check-raising and if you see the resistance it is better to fold.

Delays in your opponents movements can also tell you something about the others hands. Usually when a player wants the others to think that his has a bad hand he waits for 10 or 20 second as if he were thinking. Of course there can be some others reasons like bad connection or some other things to do, but always be aware of a long-thinking player. If he is not a complete fish, he is probably trying to decrease the value of his hands for you his hand.

Still, like in offline poker you should determine possible tells and compare your suggestions with the hands you see at the showdown.

Chatting

You dont have to take you opponents table-talks in the chat window too seriously, but sometimes they can be pretty informative. We dont mean that you should change your playing style when someone types I've got nutz. You never know whether he is bluffing or not. This kind of talk cant be systemized. Chatting tells are the tells of the indirect information.

Generally if a person writes something every other minute, hes definitely a fish. They just burn with the desire to share their brillianr poker wisdom with you. Such players cant fully concentrate on the game typing something all the time on the game. Thats why they usually play too loose.

If you read something like damn ive lost $40 to a better flush on my other table, note that the players attention is distracted and try to make the best profit of this fact.

If a player types stuff like man, online poker is a real fun be sure you are dealing with a beginner. We think we should not explain what it means.

Fishy Tells

Here are some more tells that can help you to define a bad player. They often curse the virtual dealer and may have abusive nicknames. By the way speaking of bad manners we should not forget about folding. Folding when there is a possibility to check is nothing more but a mauvais ton, a wise man stated. If you see a player doing this the possibility that he plays bad is very high. However, you should remember that if you see someone folding on the river, when there is a possibility to check, he may probably be a good player who does not want to show his hand to reveal his bluff. That can be a useful piece of information sometimes.

One more fishy tell: when a person keeps reloading his bankroll he is not only a bad player but is also ready to give you his money as he has some on his account. Dont lose your chance!
